Food packaging vision inspection systems

Automatically check labels, date and batch codes, barcodes, caps, lids, fill, pack orientation and visible condition at production speed. We connect the inspection to recipes, line controls and verified reject handling.

Direct answer

What is food packaging vision inspection?

It uses industrial cameras and controlled lighting to check visible packaging features against the active product and quality rules. Each pack receives a result such as pass, reject, no-read or review, which stays associated with that pack until the line response is confirmed.

01 / Information checks

Match every visible code and label to the active product.

OCR, OCV, barcode reading and graphical checks can work with the selected recipe. The decision should distinguish a missing field, an unreadable mark and readable but incorrect information.

  • Use-by, best-before, lot and batch code verification
  • 1D barcode, QR and Data Matrix reading
  • Label presence, identity, position and skew
  • Artwork, logo, colour and variant checks
  • Product-to-pack and code-to-recipe matching
02 / Physical pack checks

Check visible pack condition before release.

Multiple views can assess closures, fill, orientation and accessible seal areas. The design accounts for glossy film, curved containers, condensation, product variation, washdown requirements and access for cleaning or changeover.

  • Cap, lid, closure and tamper-feature presence
  • Fill or product presence where visibly measurable
  • Visible seal-area alignment and contamination
  • Pack orientation, deformation and obvious damage

Controlled release

Keep the inspection result with the correct pack.

At production speed, the code result matters only if the affected pack is reliably contained.

01

Select

Load the approved recipe and expected pack information.

02

Inspect

Capture all required views under controlled illumination.

03

Track

Maintain identity through line movement and accumulation.

04

Reject

Remove and confirm the affected pack or stop safely.

The final scope follows the product, pack, retailer or quality requirement and what can be observed reliably.

Food packaging questions

Clear answers for production and quality teams.

Pack samples, artwork, code formats and line video support a useful first review.

What can food packaging vision inspection check?

Common visible checks include label presence and position, product and artwork match, date and batch codes, barcodes, cap or lid presence, tamper features, fill level, pack orientation and visible damage or contamination.

Can a system verify use-by and batch codes?

Yes when print quality, contrast, character size and format rules support reliable OCR or OCV. The result can be compared with the active recipe so missing, unreadable or incorrect codes follow a defined response.

Can vision inspect seals?

Vision can inspect visible seal-area appearance, alignment and contamination where the relevant feature is optically accessible. It does not replace a leak or integrity test when the requirement depends on properties that a camera cannot see.

Can food packaging inspection be retrofitted?

Often, subject to available space, conveyor stability, hygiene design, guarding, line-control access, imaging distance and sufficient travel between inspection and rejection.
